What is Erb’s palsy?

Erb’s palsy is a form of brachial plexus palsy characterized by weakness or paralysis of the arm. The most common cause of Erb’s palsy is a difficult childbirth, or dystocia, during which the person assisting the delivery must apply some pressure. Sometimes, this pressure results in nerve damage that affects the arm. An infant suffering from Erb’s palsy may be able to move fingers, but not the arm.

The severity of the damage to the nerves determines whether the baby will be able to heal quickly and without intervention, or whether the paralysis could be lasting. An early diagnosis of serious nerve damage can help increase the likelihood of recovery through surgery. Diagnoses after one year are in most cases too late.

There are several symptoms of Erb’s palsy:

  • Limp arm
  • Lack of muscle control in the arm
  • Lack of feeling or sensation in the arm
